Africa!

The darkest thing about Africa has always been our ignorance of it. – George Kimble

So, I’m off to Africa for a month, well not quite a month, three and a half weeks, from the 2nd of September to the 28th. This means no Internet for the next month! I think ill survive though. I’m flying down to Melbourne to meet up with some other friends on Saturday night before setting off for Johannesburg via Perth. After a four hour wait at the Johannesburg airport we will catch another plain to Nairobi and from there our journey begins! I will be taking heaps of photos while working in an orphanage, travelling between Kenya and Uganda and going on a three day safari so stay tuned and subscribe to my RSS feed to have a look when I get back! I will try to check my emails and get back to you so still email if it is important but I can’t guarantee I will be able to get online. See you all in a month! Look after the Internet for me.

If I Was the CEO of Microsoft!

I was thinking last night about all the mistakes Microsoft seems to be making and I thought what would I do if I was in control of the company. Many of the ideas I had come from Apple but why not? They are both similar companies so why does Microsoft keep getting it so wrong?

My Answer

  • Release a single version of Windows 7. This one is simple, people want to all have the same version of an operating system, we don’t want to buy the middle of the road edition only to find out 2 months down the track that we should have got the top version. Mashable does a great job of explaining the ins and outs in this post.
  • Unify the Microsoft websites. At the moment, Microsoft have multiple websites on multiple domains an sub domains. Why not copy Apple, hire a decent design firm and get a makeover that brings all the information onto one website. That way when noobs need something they know they simply need to go to the main Microsoft website and they can easily get to anything from there.
  • Pre-installed trials of the Office Suite. If Microsoft included trials of the Office Suite with windows, noobs wouldn’t have to worry about buying a copy from the shop, installing and activating them, they could simply active their copy over the Internet. I’m not sure if Microsoft do this sometimes, but I’ve never seen it done.
  • Release a line of hardware. They succeeded to break into the gaming marketplace with the Xbox (although with the 360 they did have some trouble with the evil red ring of death) so they can obviously work with making or at least branding hardware as their own. They just need to make it simple and release, a home computer, an office computer and a gaming computer.
  • Market towards gamers. I would also market heavily towards gamers, games are one of the things that sets Microsoft apart from every other operating system on the planet and they should use this fact effectively before game developers start turning to other markets.

What Would YOU Do?

Do you have any fantastic ideas that could get people to love this company again? Share them below in the comments.

OS X: New File from Right Click

One of the things that has annoyed my since I first switched to OS X from Windows XP is having no option to right click in a folder and create a document then and there! Yeasterday I got so annoyed with my problem that I did a quick search and came back with NuFile, (pronounced new-file, Nu is a greek letter) a small program that adds and option into your prefrance pane to do excatly what I needed; add create new documents to my right click menu.
