Gravity, the s60 twitter client!

Gravity is a word that has been flying around a few twitter users for the past month or so, a closed beta release was all the information we had on this exciting new twitter client and finally its here!

Starting Gravity brings you to the home screen with news and updates, twitter (this is your twitter account, you can have multiple accounts signed in), twitter search, images, add account and online.

News and updates

News and updates contains news on Gravity and any recent updates. This screen also allows you to update straight from your handset which is a great feature as you don’t have to check the website to see if there have been any changes to the software.

Twitter screen

Next there is your twitter accounts, if you have more than one account it will come up below, the add account option lets you add accounts quickly and easily. Without going into the twitter screen you can already see who made the last update to your feed and how long ago it happened, it also displays avatars of the last 8 people that were active in your feed. Pressing the ok button or right on the joystick takes you to the timeline view from here you can scroll up and down through your twitter feed and ‘options > view’ gives lets you turn on and off avatars and change the theme. To send a tweet from simply start typing and a half screen text input box will show allowing you to see what’s a few tweets while you tweet. Pressing right on the joystick again brings you to the the @ replies view, then to your DMs, then your own tweets, then your favourites, then your friends and finally your followers. This tabbed approach to organising your tweets works spectacularly well and is very responsive. To RT, @reply, FAV, un-follow or view someone’s other tweets as well as click links from within tweets simply click (middle/ok button) and anybody’s tweet and buttons will come up below their name with options to do all the aforementioned tasks.

Twitter search

The search screen works just like the account screen except scrolling left and right takes you through your different searches and the end option (scroll all the way right) displays twitters trending topics, clicking on these will open a new search screen.

Images

The images view shows your 8 latest images and lets you quickly and easily post them to twitpic. Simply clicking on one of the images brings up the tweet screen and you can add your message before you click ‘post’. This is a great system until you wish to upload something that you took last week and it doesn’t show up in your 8 latest pictures. This won’t be a problem for most people as they will almost immediately upload pictures as they take them but for someone like me without a data plan I will almost always wait until I have a wi-fi connection before uploading any pictures.

Conclusions

Gravity is hands down the best twitter client for the s60 phones and I highly reccomend it. However, I do have a few gripes about it at the moment that I am sure will get fixed in the near future; you can only upload from the 8 latest images and there is no option to change how it updates, there should be settings to control how often you want it to update. A free trial is avalible here, so go grab a copy and test it out!

Other options

There are a few other twitter clients that I am aware of, Cellity, Twibble, I am doing and Fring all of which pale in insignifcance when compared to Gravity but if you want to check your other options give these a go. Another way to use twitter on your phone is to point your mobile browser to http://dabr.co.uk/ this is the best way to use twitter aside from Gravity in my oppinion but the annoyance of opening up a browser every time you want to tweet somthing becomes annoying.

As far as I know @janole is working on this, In the mean time, Psiloc’s Font Magnifier might do it – http://bit.ly/PqvUL
